    Step

  1. Prepare before you hear about a hurricane.
  2. Buy a generator. These will provide electricity until the power returns.
  3. Purchase and use Self powered Radios and Self powered Flashlights Batteries will be unavailable.
  4. 4

    Glowsticks are safer than candles.

  5. 5

Board or tape the windows. Plywood is the best wood to use. Do not use duct tape. Use alligator tape.

  6. 6

Evacuate, if you can. Go somewhere north of the storm, where it will have lost strength by the time it reaches the area. For example, if you live in Florida, go to northern Georgia.

  7. 7

Dispose of or eat all perishable foods 12 hours before the storm. When the power goes out, your refrigerator will stop working, and any meat, dairy, or anything that needs to be refrigerated, will spoil. Soda does not have to be disposed, it doesn’t spoil.

  8. 8

Make sure that anything you normally leave outside is either tied down or brought inside 6 HOURS BEFORE STORM. Find a shelter. This shelter should not have any windows or skylights. Bring valuables into the shelter, like jewelery, photographs, or electronics.

  9. 9

Bring your family and pets into the shelter 2 HOURS BEFORE STORM. Get a battery-powered radio, and use it for updates. At this point, the outer bands should have already started to affect you.

  10. 10

Don’t leave your shelter. This is the most dangerous time in the storm. The area around the eye of the storm is where they measure the wind strength. At this time, tornadoes are a possibility.

  11. 11

Wait until at least 30 minutes after the eye of the storm has passed over before entering rooms with windows. Still, you should be very careful. At this point, there is still a chance of debris breaking your window.

  12. 12

After the storm has passed, you will have a lot to deal with. There will be lots of trees and downed power lines. Most likely, your house will have some damage, no matter how strong the storm.
